Inside re:publica 2026
Berlin is buzzing again. From May 18–20, the industrial halls of STATION Berlin are transforming into Europe’s largest digital society festival: re:publica 2026. This year’s motto, "Never Gonna Give You Up," is a call to action against societal apathy, blending high-level politics with the raw energy of hacker culture. The Heart of the Festival: The Makerspace While the main stages host debates on digital ethics and AI assistant innovations like BärGPT, the real hands-on magic happens at the Makerspace. Curated by the Global Innovation Gathering (GIG), this year’s space focuses on AI and digital creativity. Expect a playground for the "digital DIY" movement, including: AI & Digital Fabrication: Explore how generative AI can be a collaborative tool for makers and artists. Sustainability & Repair: Join workshops by Fashion Revolution Germany at the textile bar to learn circular design and the "right to repair". Global Collaboration: Connect with grassroots innovators from the Global South to tackle real-world challenges through open-source hardware. Why This Isn’t Your Typical Tech Conference Since its start as a small blogger meetup in 2007, re:publica has evolved into a "class reunion" for the internet community. It’s a rare space where activists, scientists, and government officials share a coffee with hackers and artists. The vibe is uniquely "Berlin"—ambitious and serious, yet playful and inclusive, with a program that is over 50% women-led. Whether you're there for deep-dive workshops on Day 2 or just to soak in the off-stage art installations, it’s about active participation, not just passive listening.
